Abstract :
The extensive use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) applications
like ChatGPT and Gemini is changing academic writing in higher
education, but there is a dearth of empirical studies on this subject in
Bangladesh. This paper explores the beliefs and perceptions of the
students in a private university regarding the application and the
perception of these AI tools in writing, its impact on writing practices,
and the ethical and practical issues involved in the application of these
AI tools. The research design used was a mixed-methods study design
that involved the use of both an online questionnaire that was filled by
101 students in Bangladeshi private universities and semi-structured
interviews with five respondents. The results show that students create
ideas, analyze information, improve their grammar, and develop
vocabulary, mostly with the help of ChatGPT and Gemini. The majority
of the participants considered AI as a learning aid but not as a
replacement for independent writing and underlined the need to check
AI-generated materials.
